Strong entry expected for Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally
NEXT weekÂ’s Westlodge Hotel Fastnet Rally seems set to have over 120 entries with the top ten featuring possibly as many as six World Rally Cars.
Last yearÂ’s winner, Welsh ace, Mel Evans (Subaru WRC) will defend his title on the eight stage event that will be based in Bantry for the first time since its inception in 1982. Welsh/Irish contests are nothing new to the Fastnet Rally and go back to those early years, principally involving John Price in a Renault 5 Turbo with his Irish rivals.
The one surprising statistic about the Fastnet Rally is that it wasnÂ’t until 2004 that an overseas driver won the event; MacclesfieldÂ’s Jim Harrison (Subaru WRC) took a five second victory over Liam McCarthy (Subaru WRC) in the Marine Hotel Fastnet Rally. Since then, Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen (who won the recent Rally of Scotland) and Evans have tasted success.
