The former Swansea Metropolitan University motorsport engineering student entered a six-week online time-trial marathon for the GT Academy competition for the chance to train as a driver for real – fending off thousands of other hopefuls. His only experience before sitting behind the wheel was the laps he put in around the virtual circuits of Gran Turismo 5.
He competed against fellow gamers across the world and was chosen from 12 other finalists by former F1 driver Eddie Irvine.
He said that he had six weeks of “near-constant” gaming in an effort to win through to the Academy final – racking up an average of three to four hours every day. “For six weeks I hardly took a break,” he said.
In preparation for Dubai, Jann has endured six months of intensive training – including running the New York Marathon, as well as races all across the UK.
But unlike the stereotypical gamer, Jann comes from a sporting pedigree – with dad Steve Mardenborough a former Cardiff City, Newport County and Swansea City professional.
