Gabrielson is well known in storm chaser circles for capturing some of the most extreme video footage of tornadoes, something which the Weather Channel and other news outlets pay handsomely for.  His knack to put himself in position to intercept twisters is extraordinary but the video he captures oftentimes makes some question whether he is a danger to himself and others. 

During the November 7, 2011 chase, Gabrielson was apparently backing up on a roughly paved road as a tornado passed directly in front of him.  Some reports make mention that the vehicle suffered some sort of failure however Gabrielson says nothing about such a problem on his website .

Gabrielson writes, "What appears to have happened was due to the heavy rain, there was some ponding [sic] on the road ways, some of the side roads in Oklahoma are paved, and then repaved, and then patched. While back up [sic] it appears I may have hit either a puddle or one of the patches at the worst possible angle. The car then backed sideways into the ditch, digging into the mud, and hitting a dirt embankment and rolled over about 1 1/2 times."
